Ovarian Cysts and Infertility

Is there a link between ovarian cysts and infertility? The simple answer is yes. PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome) has been found to be one of the main causes of infertility in women of childbearing age, mainly in their 20s and 30s. Studies have also shown that it may be hereditary. It usually begins in the teen years.

What is PCOS?

Women with PCOS have an imbalance in their sex hormone levels. This imbalance causes a number of problems namely increasing the male hormone testosterone, which is why you may seem to have an increase in male characteristics. This can lead to the formation of clusters of tiny cysts on the ovaries interfering with the normal menstrual cycle making it difficult, if not impossible for a woman to conceive a child. It can also lead to serious complications including diabetes and heart disease.

What are the symptoms of PCOS?

*Some symptoms of PCOS include:

  • An increase of hair growth on the body similar to that of a male
  • Facial hair and deepening voice
  • Thinning hair
  • Skipped periods or light periods
  • Acne that worsens
  • Diabetes
  • Weight gain or obesity
  • Infertility

What tests should be expected?

An ultrasound is used to detect the presence of any cysts. Other tests include those that check for insulin, blood sugar and hormone levels. A physical is also performed that usually detects any abnormal facial or body hair, acne and any other abnormalities that may be present.

How is it treated?

Your doctor will probably prescribe medications, such as:

  • Birth Control Pills – to get your hormone levels back on track, but not if you are trying to get pregnant.
  • Metformin – which is a medicine used to control diabetes and can reduce the androgen levels (testosterone) getting your menstrual cycle working normally again.
  • Fertility Drugs – used for those who are trying to get pregnant.

*Other treatments include:

  • Getting regular exercise - even simple walking exercises are helpful
  • Eating a healthy diet – stick to fresh fruits and vegetables, lean meats, nuts and whole grains.
  • Controlling weight gain – losing weight can be beneficial in getting your menstrual cycle to function properly.

Ovarian cysts and infertility can cause depression, stress and unnecessary grief. If you have been trying to get pregnant and can’t, please do yourself a favor and get checked for PCOS. There is help around the corner and you should know you are not alone. Many women suffer from PCOS but that doesn’t mean you can’t do anything about it.
